Turn Off Hot Water Gravity Fed System

Came up to house about 1 hour later and top of my water filter original was cracked and water spewing and had flooded my basement.

And today in many parts of new zealand where access to power is uneconomic or impossible gravity fed water systems are still used to keep water flowing to troughs and homes. Our gravity water system spring fed has worked really well for 24 years. Some systems also feed cold water to bathroom cold taps and the toilet cistern so the only mains water is going to the cold tap in the kitchen. I used a faucet connector and shut off valve on it.
Since this is only going to feed the cold water tap on the faucet. Tried to turn on it was hard then dirty water. If power is a problem gravity may be your best bet for a reliable water supply. I do plan on fitting isolating valves so the job will be easier in future. How do i turn stop the hot water flowing.
This obviously means that even if you turn off the cold supply the hot water cylinder will still be full of water. The hot water taps will be fed from the tank in the loft which flows by gravity down to the hot water cylinder and forces hot water out to the hot water taps.
